Rob Van Valen - Creatures By Monday August 13, 2008

Filed under: Music News — rlsmusic aka BoB @ 9:33 am

Rob Van Valen, who also goes by the monicker Odd Dots, currently lives in Berlin and has had previous work released on New York’s Wolf+Lamb. With Archipel he now brings us the sleek and ultra-wobbly and wet “Creatures by Monday” featuring a remix from Archipel friend and one of Montreal’s finest, Mateo Murphy.

Cannibal Orgy” and “Robot Destroy” weave nets of axonal candy floss soaked in psychotomimetic shards of digitized phantasmic matter implanted inside fleeting amnesiac thoughts with such a grip as to never let go while “Riot in a Red Coat” is a super-heavy marching stomp through blackened mud saturated streets with grating mechanical ferocity.

This release concludes with a out of your mind remix by dancefloor veteran Mateo Murphy that will conclude this release with a punch line to any peak time action.

This release is for sale until November 2008

Matthew Herbert

Filed under: Music News — rlsmusic aka BoB @ 9:29 am

Matthew Herbert will release his latest Big Band album There’s Me and There’s You in October.

A collection of protest songs, the album has been promised to put together a bit of “lush jazz instrumentation, soulful vocals, fascinating rhythms and a secret underground arsenal of outlandish samples.” That much, of course, is what we’ve come to expect from Herbert. (Honestly, what would a Herbert album be without the sampled sound of 70 condoms being scraped along the floor of the British Museum?) But what makes this particular release different from his 2001 album Goodbye Swingtime is the reliance on lyrics, which center around various controversial topics like the war in Iraq, torture, climate change, and religion. Heavy stuff.

And it’s stuff that is done in heavy collaboartion with Eska, a London-based artist who has worked with David Sylvian and Tony Allen, among others.

Release Date:28 October 2008 on K7

Sasse - Toinen August 6, 2008

Filed under: Music News — rlsmusic aka BoB @ 6:44 pm

Moodmusic owner Sasse casts an eye to Detroit for his latest artist album. With over a hundred singles and remixes under his belt, it’s surprising that this is only the second longplayer from the productive producer, whose musical career spans 15 years.

The album entitled Toinen, literally meaning ’second’ in Finnish, takes a slightly different direction from Klas Lindblad’s debut album of Italo House & Space Disco on Made Within The Upper Stairs Of Heaven. Expect Sasse’s usual euphoric overtones, highlighted by dangerously groovy basslines and percussion which echoes of his mid-90’s productions as Freestyle Man.

Charles Webster - Coast 2 Coast

Filed under: Music News — rlsmusic aka BoB @ 6:41 pm

Expected in October, the deep house legend will offer up two discs of material. The first will showcase Webster’s renowned production skills: it will be a mix will be largely composed of remixes and edits of some interesting choices. (DJ Koze and Dirtybird’s Justin Martin feature.) The second, on the other hand, will go back to Webster’s DJing bread-and-butter: soulful house of the late ’90s variety—the type of track found in spades on Webster’s celebrated 2001 Peacefrog joint, Born on the 24th of July. The opening track here is Larry Heard’s “Missing You.”

Jussi-Pekka - Multife El Ep August 5, 2008

Filed under: Music News — rlsmusic aka BoB @ 6:59 pm

Well, it might be frozen up north, but that doesn’t stop Jussi-Pekka to keep the jackers coming! Our man from Nokia has a long list of releases, and his first release for Floppy Funk is another cracker. “Regression” is a magic old school slightly acid house track. “Depression” is more modern and techno, keeping a deep edge. The “Regression” remix courtesy of Frankie (the man who keeps jackin and freakin with his Franke label) is another fine crazy tune to go nuts!

Tom Dazing - Motion Sickness EP

Filed under: Music News — rlsmusic aka BoB @ 3:16 pm

Belgium’s Tom Dazing returns to ToysForBoys for his second EP on the label, with two tracks of growling, fuzzy madness, plus a remix from Tim Xavier.

“Motion Sickness” is crafted to take the dancefloor on an unsettling ride, with undulating waves of distortion and pangs of dissonance. Those with sensitivities to beeps and clicks are advised to stay away from this track. Keep your barf bags handy! This one is also featured on Bloody Mary’s brand new Toys For Boys mix CD Tanz mit mir (TFBCD02). The snappy beat of “Cappadoras” is slightly more straightforward, but its layered syncopations of rhythm and melody always keep things interesting.

Providing a rougher and rawer take on “Motion Sickness” is Tim Xavier, who recently relocated his studio enterprise Manmade Mastering from Brooklyn to Berlin, and is also half of the duo Afternoon Coffee Boys (Clink Music, Cocoon) along with Tony Rohr. This jack-of-all-trades also runs his own labels Klickhaus, 773 Tekno, and LTD400. ToysForBoys was thrilled by hearing the results of Mr. Xavier’s remix: with its dirty, propsultive bass thump, combined with those swelling surges of fuzz, this track is a vacuum cleaner and you’re a tiny speck of dust. Watch out!

Motorcitysoul - Technique

Filed under: Music News — rlsmusic aka BoB @ 3:03 pm

Frankfurt’s deep house duo Motorcitysoul will release their sophomore album on Simple in October.

The time seems ripe for the music of Matthias Vogt and C-Rock, what with the European continent currently in the throes of a deep house revival. That’s exactly what’s on offer throughout Technique—an album that promises at various moments to “want to love you more,” “change you…slowly,” and “deliver me.” Lest you be discouraged by the seriousness, though, there’s also a song about space cats. No matter the subject matter, the duo is usually led by synthesizers that sound like they’ve been doused in what the press notes call “soulful melancholy.”

Following their fifth consecutive UK number 1 album last year, the GRAMMY award winning We Are The Night (Best Electronic/Dance Album), The Chemical Brothers return with Brotherhood a ‘Best Of’ collection with a kick and a twist, set for release on September 2, 2008.

In a career that to date has spanned 13 years and accrued 9 million record sales Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons have established themselves as true pioneers of electronic music and as The Chemical Brothers they have become one of the most popular dance acts of all time. Now seems the perfect time to take stock of their seminal output with the double disc celebration that is Brotherhood.

Brotherhood comprises 2 discs, the first is a collection of 13 undeniable benchmark singles from the band’s immense back catalogue and new track “Keep My Composure” which features the shimmering flow of Baltimore’s Spank Rock.

Until now Electronic Battle Weapons 1-9 have only been available on various limited formats and this is the first time they have been widely available.

Format:b - Steam Circuit

Filed under: Music News — rlsmusic aka BoB @ 10:07 pm

Berlin Wonderboys Mitte Topseller and local Uberheroes Format:B with their first album and in best shape.„Steam circuit“ comes with a lot of pressure and fun, but is by all means everything else than just a load of hot air. Franziskus Sell and Jakob Hildenbrand did allways stand out with their highly energetic tracks, strongly orientated on the club without loosing musical integrity, funkyness and the joy of playing around. Their releases „Like a techmachine“ or the extrem successfull EP „Bronson Road 69“ used to be little milestones in floorfriendly minimal Techno and Highgrade‘s label history. From the dark bouncing „Edding 850“ to trips into more acid-like areas with „Boot cut“ or the easy rollin‘ stuff „Like a techmachine“ towards a point when vocals come into play, Format:B go one step further. As with „Si pero no“ which has the clear potential to hit the scene like „hay consuelo“ did. In cooperation with Jake the Rapper in „Something suitable“ - where they combine their trademark sub-basslines with hypnotic sounds and deliver in combination with Jake‘s vocals, the perfect instant-clubbanger.All in all, it‘s a wild ride on the zeitgeist of clubsound, powerfull tracks which seem to never loose their breath. An extensive Autumn clubtour will drop the whole Tour do Funk Life, Catch them if you can!

Tim Simenon (Bomb The Bass) - Future Chaos

Filed under: Music News — rlsmusic aka BoB @ 11:31 am

UK dance music pioneer Tim Simenon returns as Bomb The Bass this September with Future Chaos.

Simenon, who is often credited with helping to raise the profile of dance music in the UK through his classic “Beat Dis” single, has been relatively quiet since 2001’s Tracks, a 12-inch collaboration with Meat Beat Manifesto’s Jack Dangers. It hasn’t been for lack of inspiration, however. Instead, the producer has been working quietly on things ever since. But after building up a number of tracks for a proposed album, Simenon trashed the results, deciding to strip everything down to a Minimoog synth and little else. “There’s so much that goes around producing records; doing things this way and that. But this was us saying, Fuck it, let’s just record some tunes, you know,” says Simenon in the press notes accompanying the album.

Along for the ride are some indie favorites: Jon Spencer, Mark Lanegan (Queens of the Stone Age), Paul Conboy, and David Best (Fujiya & Miyagi) all turn up in some capacity—mostly providing vocals to Simenon’s dark tunes. Collaboration, of course, is Simenon’s specialty: he was the one behind the decks on Neneh Cherry’s “Buffalo Stance” and Seal’s “Crazy.” That said, we expect the results on Future Chaos to be a tad rawer than those studio confections. Note: early fans to the party will get the chance to grab a limited edition second disc, chock full of remixes from acts like Various Production, Gui Boratto, Michael Fakesch, and more.
